The Race for the Inca Trail: Why You Need to Book Months in Advance

The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is arguably the most famous trek in South America. It offers a unique combination of cloud forest scenery, ancient Inca ruins, and the exclusive reward of entering Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Intipunku). However, hiking this trail requires strategy.

The Permit System To protect the trail, the Peruvian government strictly limits access to 500 people per day. This number includes guides, porters, and cooks, leaving only about 200 spots for tourists.

The Golden Rule: Book Early Due to high demand, permits for the Classic Inca Trail sell out months in advance.

  • High Season (May – Sept): We recommend booking 6 months in advance.
  • Low Season: We recommend booking at least 3 to 4 months in advance.

What if permits are sold out? Don’t worry! Authentic Puriq Tours offers incredible alternatives that don’t require the same permit system, such as the Salkantay Trek or the Lares Trek. These routes offer pristine nature and cultural immersion without the crowds.
