Trekking Essentials: What to Pack for the Andes

Whether you are hiking the Salkantay Trek or taking a day tour to Rainbow Mountain, the weather in the Andes can be unpredictable. You might experience four seasons in a single day! Here is the essential packing list recommended by our expert guides.

1. Layers are Key The temperature fluctuates drastically. Mornings can be freezing, while midday sun is intense. Dress in layers: a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm fleece or down jacket, and a lightweight waterproof shell.

2. Broken-In Hiking Boots Never bring brand-new boots to a trek. Blisters can ruin a hike. Ensure your boots are comfortable, waterproof, and have good ankle support for the uneven Inca terrain.

3. Sun Protection At high altitude, the UV rays are much stronger. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are non-negotiable, even on cloudy days.

4. A Good Daypack You will need a comfortable backpack (20-30L) to carry your water, snacks, camera, and rain gear. If you hire a porter for a multi-day trek, this daypack is all you will carry while hiking.
