Conquering the Altitude: How to Prepare for Your Cusco Adventure

Arriving in Cusco is a magical experience, but for many travelers, the altitude (3,399 meters / 11,152 feet) can be a surprise. At Cusco Esencial, we want you to enjoy every moment of your trip, which is why we’ve compiled our top tips for beating Soroche (altitude sickness).

1. Take it Easy on Day One Your body needs time to adjust to the thinner air. We recommend treating your first day in Cusco as a “rest day.” Take a slow walk around the Plaza de Armas, but avoid strenuous hiking or heavy exercise immediately after landing.

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate The Andean air is dry, and altitude accelerates dehydration. Drink plenty of water before and during your trip. Avoid excessive alcohol or caffeine during your first 24 hours, as these can worsen dehydration.

3. Try the Local Remedy: Coca Tea You will find Mate de Coca everywhere in Cusco. This natural tea, made from coca leaves, has been used by the Incas for centuries to combat fatigue and aid acclimatization. It’s a gentle, authentic way to help your body adapt.

4. Eat Light Digestion slows down at high altitudes. Opt for light meals like soups (Quinoa soup is delicious!) or grilled trout, and try to eat a lighter dinner to ensure a good night’s sleep.
